Short abstract

Internet started as a network for science and technology, and still a large part of the documents available on the Internet are scientific and technical documents provided by universities and other research and educational organisations. However, the spread of availability of the Internet to commercial organisations and to undergraduate students has meant a decline in the reliability of the documents available on the net.

AQUA is a prototype implementation of a general user interface paradigm, which is capable of modelling iterative query refinement and embedding several common and advanced query techniques. The objective of this interface is not only to provide an integrated view for different searching and browsing techniques, but also to help the user to explore the contents of a digital library.

Introduction

The DELOS Working Group was funded by the ESPRIT Long Term Research Programme (LTR No. 21057) within the Fourth Framework Programme of the Commission of the European Union. The objective was to promote research into the further development of digital library technologies.

We installed the first node of the globally distributed digital library called NCSTRL (Networked Computer Science Technical Reports Library) in Europe in 1995.

DSD has organized a DELOS workshop on collaborative filtering in 1997.

The website of the state owned Hungarian company Szerencsejáték Rt. (Hungarian National Lottery Company) and the software behind the site was written and is continuously maintained by the department. The state-of-the-art .NET technology makes the site very secure and extremely fast despite the very confidential nature of the database.
